Hitman 3 coming to Epic Games Store as a timed PC exclusive

Hitman 3 is coming to PC, but with a catch. IO Interactive’s upcoming stealth game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for 12 months when it launches in January.

IO Interactive announced the deal in a blog post which revealed new details about the game.

“As an independent studio, our partnership with Epic has given us the freedom to create Hitman 3 exactly as we imagined and self-publish the game to our players directly. It’s also important to us that we honor the time our existing PC players have spent in our previous games.”

IO confirmed that PC players will be able to transfer their Hitman 2 progress and unlocks from Steam to the Epic Games Store. Players can import locations from both Hitman and Hitman 2 as well.

To celebrate the deal, players can pick up Hitman for free on the Epic Games Store starting Thursday, August 27.

Hitman 3 is the latest major title to sign a timed exclusivity deal with the Epic Games Store. Previously, titles such as Borderlands 3 and Fallout 76 were only available on PC through the storefront. Both titles finally came to Steam earlier this spring.

The announcement came alongside a trailer for the game, which showed off the game’s second mission. Set in Dartmoor, England, the Thornbridge Mystery mission features a “murder mystery” element. IO says players will disguise themselves as a detective and solve a family murder in a large manor (similar to whodunits like Knives Out), all while committing one of their own.

“Every member of the family is a possible suspect, and it’s been quite the challenge to make sure everything doesn’t fall apart just because the player wants to play around,” explains lead writer Nick Price. “In fact, that sort of behavior should be rewarded in a Hitman game, so we have been working hard on making sure that depending on what a player discovers during their investigation, outcomes might differ.

Pre-orders for Hitman 3 will go live later this month. In addition to the Epic Games Store, the game will be available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia. The game is slated for a January 2021 release.

3 game studios are closing their doors, including the developer of Godfall
Godfall player in combat.

We're barely into 2025, and the gaming industry has already delivered bad news: Three studios are shutting their doors, resulting in dozens of layoffs. Two of the three studios are subsidiaries of Enad Global 7, and the company said, "This decision does not come lightly and follows several initiatives to turn the subsidiary profitable."

The first studio to close is Toadman Interactive, best known for Immortal: Unchained and Bloodsports TV. While not the direct developer, the studio offered support during the development of The Lord of the Rings Online and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. According to Enad Global 7, the closing affects everyone not under contract, and existing employment contracts will be honored. Adding salt to the wound is the news that 38 developers from Piranha Games are also going to be laid off following the subpar performance of MechWarrior 5: Clans.

One of 2022’s best beat ’em ups is free today on the Epic Games Store
Sifu's main character jumping over a table as two enemies attack.

As Epic Games' holiday giveaway winds down, the second-to-last game has finally been announced. Sifu, the 2022 hit beat 'em up game, is free to download until 11 a.m. tomorrow morning, Jnauary 1. Sifu blends smooth, cinematic martial arts combat with the consistent try-again mentality of roguelikes, but every death comes with a price: the terrible, inexorable rampage of time.

That might have been a bit dramatic. Each time you die, your magical amulet brings you back to life, but you've aged a little. With each death, your character will visibly age and take more damage from hits, but your blows also pack a little more oomph. Some skills may become unavailable as your character ages, and age can essentially turn you into a fragile weapon. You might deal massive damage, but a single hit is all it takes to end your run.

One of 2024’s most underrated games is free on Epic Games Store right now
A prison guard shoots aliens in Redacted.

Epic Games Store's holiday giveaway continues today with Redacted, a roguelike-spinoff of The Callisto Protocol that takes heavy inspiration from Hades and other similar titles. It has a totally different vibe than its source material, though, and it's a game that you can get a lot of enjoyment out of -- especially for free.

Redacted is a roguelike where players must fight their way through Black Iron Prison to the single remaining escape pod, finding loot and skills along the way. It has strong progression systems, as Redacted lets players increase their character level and upgrades between each run, but it adds a bit of a twist: You're racing more than just hordes of enemies.
